Lesson 3 - Practicing Design Strategies
I learned how to transform a photograph of someone into a portrait made directly from text specific to that individual using displacement maps. I selected Gandhi because he was fearless and an inspiration to the world, even though he lived a difficult life.

Photoshop Skills Used:
- Displacement maps
- Gaussian Blur
- Quick Selection Tool
- Layer Mask
- Distort
- Levels Adjustment
- Crop Tool
Design Thoughts:
- Displacement maps work best when blurred; therefore, I applied a Gaussian Blur to the image at 4px
- I separated the image from the background, replacing the background with a new layer and coloring it black
- Used wordle.net to copy and paste quotes from Gandhi to produce word map and then copied and pasted the text onto new layers over the image
- Contouring the text to the original image, I used the filter > distort > displace - this realigned the text to the displacement maps total values of the face
- Contrast- black background to white image/text
- To lighten the image, I used the levels tool
- To right align the image, I cropped it providing blank space on the left
