Extra Credit Exhibit 2 - Cracked Face Disintegration
Intrigued by fashion and the beauty industry as a whole, I decided to mix it up as I tried to distort the traditional view of models by making the portrait crack/fall apart. I felt empowered as a woman and as an individual as I created this image. Specifically, I had the thought of how hard women are on themselves when it comes to physical attributes; therefore, I wanted to emphasize inner beauty. The underlying message was to defy the norm and be yourself because everyone else is already taken.

Photoshop Skills Used:
- Quick Selection Tool; Inverse
- Refine Edge
- Brush Tool
- Layer Masks; Soft Light + Overlay
- Polygonal Lasso Tool
- Move Tool
- Hue & Saturation Adjustment
- Color Balance Adjustment
Design Thoughts:
- Use the Quick Selection Tool to select the background of the model; select the inverse and refine edge to bring back the edges of hair lost. Applying smart radius, and 1.2 px in refine edge and exporting as a new layer with a mask is how I began.
- To create the cracking overlay on her face, I applied Layer Masks: Soft Light and Overlay.
- Polygonal Lasso Tool was used to select specific pieces of the cracked texture, move them and transform; placed in different areas to make it look like it was falling apart. This technique was repeated multiple times to get the image above.
- Once all the pieces were selected; layers were merged and the following adjustments were applied: Hue & Saturation and Color Balance. Trial and error allowed the color to be as close to her skin tone as possible.
- Cracked face disintegration effect to make it appear as if her face was cracking.
